If you're standing there with a wall decal on your floor and scratching your head over how to set it up right, don't fret! Learn how to put up wall decals with our easy tutorial below!
6 Easy Steps for How to Put Up Wall Decals
Before you get started, there are a handful of everyday household items you'll need to put up your wall decal. This includes:
- A cloth or sponge
- Painter's tape
- A level or level app on your phone
- A credit card or squeegee
Once you have the necessary items, follow the steps below.
Step One: Prep Your Surface Area
Before you start placing your decal, you want to make sure your surface is clear of dust or residue. If you've recently painted, make sure you wait 2 to 3 weeks before applying a decal to the surface.
Use a damp cloth or damp sponge to clean the surface where you plan to place your decal. Wait for it to dry completely before moving on to step two.
Step Two: Position Your Decal the Way You Want It
Once the wall is clean and dry, you'll want to position your decal on the wall. Use painter's tape to position it on your wall, then take a step back to analyze whether it's positioning is satisfactory.
For decals that require precision, use your level or level app to measure how straight it is and adjust accordingly.
Step Three: Begin the Transfer Process
Once you're satisfied with the positioning, slowly pull back the backing paper. If a piece of the decal sticks to the backing, replace it on the wall and apply pressure to it with your fingers before trying again.
All that should remain is the vinyl decal and the thin transfer paper.
Step Four: Smooth It Out
Once the backing is removed, use your squeegee or credit card to press the decal against the wall. Use a smooth, firm, scraping motion from the center of the decal to the outer corners.
Work slowly from the center outward in order to smooth out the vinyl and prevent bubbles.
Step Five: Peel Back the Transfer Paper
Once your vinyl has been sufficiently smoothed out, very slowly peel back the transfer paper. Start with the top corners and gradually pull it down and away from the decal itself.
Avoid pulling at an angle between 45 to 90 degrees, as this can pull the vinyl from the wall.
Step Six: Enjoy Your Stunning New Wall Design
Take a step back and enjoy your new wall decal, as well as a job well done!
